Shrewsbury College is encouraging eligible students aged 17 to 18 to take advantage of the NHS MenB vaccination programme to help protect themselves against meningococcal group B disease (MenB), a serious bacterial infection that can lead to meningitis and septicaemia.
Students born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 who are registered with a GP surgery in England can now book their MenB vaccination through the NHS. The vaccine is given in two doses, with the second dose administered at least four weeks after the first.
The NHS is particularly encouraging young people who are preparing for university, residential college accommodation or greater social mixing to ensure they are protected. Students can book, change or cancel their appointment online through the NHS website or by calling 119.
Some pharmacies are also offering MenB vaccinations to eligible students, including those starting university or further education as residential students.
College Principal, James Staniforth, said:
"The health and wellbeing of our students is always a priority. We would encourage eligible students and their families to check the NHS guidance and ensure they take up the opportunity to receive this free vaccination."
