Shrewsbury College proudly celebrated its students' achievements at the annual Student of the Year Awards, held on Tuesday, 14 April at Albrighton Hall.
The evening brought together 30 exceptional students from across the college, recognising not only their academic success but also their wider contributions to college life. With around 10,000 students supported each year, the awards highlight those who have gone above and beyond in their studies and personal development.
Awards were presented across a broad range of A Level, Vocational, Higher Education and Apprenticeship courses, alongside special honours for Outstanding Contribution, Success Against the Odds, and the prestigious Overall Student of the Year.

The Radbrook Foundation once again demonstrated its valued support by fully funding each award winner, thereby continuing its strong commitment to celebrating student success at the college. The Success Against the Odds award was also kindly sponsored by our MP, Dr Julia Buckley.
Each award winner received a trophy, a personalised citation, and a voucher, and the evening was shared by proud families and friends, senior college leaders, local dignitaries, and headteachers from the students’ former schools.
The Overall Student of the Year award was presented to Deryn Wheeler in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements and her thoughtful, dedicated approach to learning.

Deryn, who also received the Martin Thorpe Classics Student of the Year award, excelled in Classical Civilisation, consistently producing work of an exceptional standard and demonstrating a deep understanding of complex texts. Known for her quiet confidence, she brought a calm and considered presence to the classroom, offering insightful contributions while always encouraging and supporting those around her. Deryn’s dedication and genuine curiosity for her subjects set her apart, as did her willingness to help others succeed alongside her. Among her many achievements, she scored an impressive 90% in the “World of the Hero” examination and achieved four A* grades overall. She is now reading History at the University of Cambridge.
James Staniforth, Principal and CEO of Shrewsbury College, said:
“It is a pleasure to recognise our students’ achievements at the Student of the Year Awards. The dedication and ambition shown by this year’s winners are truly inspiring, and we are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished during their time at the college.”
