  • Have a Full Level 2 qualification if aged 19-23 (subject to a ULN check being undertaken)

  • Who is it for?

This qualification aims to help learners develop:

    - a general understanding of different types of medication and their use
    - knowledge of the procedures for obtaining, storing, administering and disposing of medication
    - an understanding of legislation and the audit process related to medication and issues of responsibility and accountability

This qualification is designed for learners wishing to develop their understanding of the safe handling of medicines. They may be learners who wish to access this training with a view to progress to further qualifications, or learners who wish to study this programme in order to complement other studies.

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 19 and above.

  • Entry Requirements

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this course. Good numeracy and literacy skills are advantageous.

  • What does the course involve?

The qualification aims to develop learners' knowledge of the safe handling of medicines within a health and social care context. It provides an introduction to the various medicines learners are likely to encounter in a work environment, covering how medication is supplied and administered, and the possible side effects. The programme explores the procedures for obtaining, storing and disposing of medicines and the legislation surrounding these three areas. It also emphasises the importance of the audit process and issues surrounding responsibility, accountability and confidentiality. The course comprises four mandatory units arranged into two modules:

    • Unit 01: Understand medication and prescriptions
    • Unit 02: Supply, storage and disposal of medication
    • Unit 03: Understand the requirements for the safe administration of medication
    • Unit 04: Record-keeping and audit processes for medication administration and storage
