  • Who is it for?

Multi-skilled mechatronics maintenance technicians carry out a broad range of activities which may include installation, testing, fault finding, rectification, modifications and the on-going planned maintenance of complex automated equipment. This requires the application of a blend of skills, knowledge and occupational behaviours across the electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems disciplines.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to ensure that plant and equipment perform to the required standard to facilitate targets regarding safety, quality, delivery, availability and cost within the aerospace, aviation, automotive, logistics, defence and wider advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors. They prepare for the maintenance activity and inform stakeholders of work status. They also complete documentation, handover work, set up their work area and are required to be competent in safe engineering practices for their own safety and those around them. They may be required to work shifts, to work at height and in confined spaces, as well as dealing with equipment which may contain high voltages, high pressures, ionising radiation and other hazards.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with a wide range of potential stake holders and others such as other technicians, engineering leaders, production operators, production leaders, business managers, customers, contractors, external agencies and members of the public. They may work in a range of environments including factories, hangers and workshops, as well as outside.

    Typical job titles include:

Field service maintenance technician, Maintenance team member, Maintenance technician, Mechatronics maintenance technician, Mechatronics technician, Multi-skilled site maintenance technician

  • Entry Requirements

For Level 3 apprenticeships, learners are generally required to have a minimum of 3-5 GCSEs (including Maths and English) at grade 4 (C) or above prior to enrolment. However, for applicants aged 19 or older, this requirement may be waived at the discretion of the employer and training provider, depending on the role and individual circumstances.

  • What does the course involve?

    • Hands-on Training & College Learning: Apprentices work on-site in high-tech environments such as automotive, aerospace, food production, or energy while attending college weekly on a day release basis. They install, test, fault-find, and maintain mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems; gaining practical experience with robotics, PLCs, and automated machinery.
    • Wide-Ranging Curriculum: The course covers electrical and mechanical maintenance, automation systems, control panels, diagnostics, technical documentation, and health and safety. Apprentices also learn to interpret engineering drawings, apply continuous improvement methods, and ensure compliance with industry standards.
    • Specialist Pathways: Learners may specialise in robotics, PLC programming, automated production lines, or smart manufacturing depending on interest and employer needs. Employers may support additional training in condition monitoring, digital diagnostics, or vendor-specific technologies depending on the sector.
    • Career-Ready Qualification: Upon completion (typically 42 months), apprentices earn a Level 3 qualification and are ready for roles like mechatronics technician, maintenance engineer, or automation support technician, with progression into engineering manufacturing technician, degree-level engineering, or lead maintenance roles.

  • How is the course assessed?

This Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship is taught at our London Road campus on a day release basis each week, with the delivery model being discussed according to the employer requirements. In addition, you will be visited at your workplace regularly by your assessor, to assess your practical skills and knowledge as well as review your progress with your employer.  You will be required to sit an End Point Assessment, towards the final stages of your programme, to ensure you have obtained the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to do your job effectively.

  • Additional Notes

Typically, this Apprenticeship will take 42 months to complete, with the potential to progress on to the Higher Apprenticeship on completion.

  • What do I do next?

To be an apprentice, you will need an employer who can offer you a specific role relevant to this apprenticeship and release you for your training. Once you have an employer in place, you can apply online. If after reading this fact sheet, you are still undecided about the course most suitable for you, please drop into one of our advice events, ring the Apprenticeship Team on 01743 653444 or email apprenticeships@shrewsbury.ac.uk
