  • How much does it cost?

    Students will be expected to provide their own overalls/clothing for workshop, safety shoes.

  • Who is it for?

    This course and level is ideal if you are a school leaver with some engineering knowledge and experience, or you require some engineering skills in your role. You will develop your understanding and practical experience of basic engineering operations including: turning, milling and general workshop practices.

    This qualification can help you to progress in a wide range of engineering roles including: Engineering operative; Engineering maintenance technician; Mechanical engineering technician; Sheet metal worker; Welder.

    You could also progress onto the Level 3 City & Guilds Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Entry Requirements

    A minimum of 4 GCSEs @ grade 4 or above including Maths and English; or a Level 1 Certificate in Engineering.

  • What does the course involve?

    The course units include:

    • Engineering health & safety
    • Principles of engineering technology
    • Mechanical principles 
    • Milling
    • Turning
    • Bench fitting

    You will learn through a combination of practical and classroom-based sessions.

    Students will be required to attend Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills) depending on prior achievements and initial assessments. 

  • How is the course assessed?

    Assessment for this coruse includes online and written exams, practical assessment, and completion of a portfolio of coursework. 

  • Additional Notes

    On completion of this course, you will have the option to progress to a Level 3 course in Engineering. This includes one of the Engineering T Level routes. An alternative option would be to undertake an apprenticeship in Engineering. All these progression routes are available through Shrewsbury Colleges Group and would also enable you to progress to higher education, such as our HNC or HND Engineering courses.

    We'll supplement the classroom teaching with visits to engineering companies to observe the skills you are learning being put into practice.
