Frequently asked questions about apprenticeships

  • What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship allows you to earn while you learn, combining paid employment with training and qualifications. You'll gain real workplace experience, develop industry-specific skills, and work towards a recognised apprenticeship standard.

Each programme is tailored to your job role and sector, helping you build the knowledge, skills and behaviours employers value.

    Entry requirements vary by level.

All Level 3 and above apprenticeships require GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and maths. For many Level 2 apprenticeships, Functional Skills can be completed as part of the programme if needed.

  • How do I apply for an apprenticeship?

Before you can start an apprenticeship, you'll need to secure a position with an employer and ensure you meet the entry requirements for your chosen programme.

A great place to begin your search is by regularly checking apprenticeship vacancies online, including the Government's Find an Apprenticeship service, where employers advertise opportunities across a wide range of industries.

You can also visit the How to apply for an apprenticeship pagevisit the How to apply for an apprenticeship page for guidance on finding an employer and securing an apprenticeship. Our team is here to support you throughout the process, offering advice on applications, CV writing and interview preparation to help you stand out and succeed.

  • What happens if I haven't got an employer?

If you haven't secured an employer yet, you can still take the first step towards your chosen career by enrolling on a full-time course in a relevant subject area. Simply complete an online application, and we'll invite you to attend an interview to discuss your options.

Studying with us allows you to develop your knowledge, practical skills and industry experience while continuing to search for an apprenticeship. Many employers also recruit directly from our student population and value recommendations from the College.

When the right apprenticeship opportunity becomes available, we'll support you in transferring from your full-time course onto an apprenticeship programme. You can make this transition at any point during the academic year, ensuring you stay on track towards your career goals.
