  • Who is it for?

A team leader/supervisor is a first-line management role, with operational/project responsibilities or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. They provide direction, instructions and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever the role.

Key responsibilities are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.

Roles/Occupations may include Supervisor, Team Leader, Project Officer, Shift Supervisor, Foreperson, and Shift Manager.

  • Entry Requirements

For Level 3 apprenticeships, learners are generally required to have GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 (C) or above prior to enrolment. However, for applicants aged 19 or older, this requirement may be waived at the discretion of the employer and training provider, depending on the role and individual circumstances.

  • What does the course involve?

    • Hands-on Training & College Learning: Apprentices work in leadership roles on-site within a business setting while attending college one day per week. They gain experience managing teams, allocating tasks, and supporting performance; learning how to lead effectively while applying business principles in real workplace settings.
    • Wide-Ranging Curriculum: The course covers leadership styles, project management, communication, finance, and operational planning. Apprentices also develop skills in coaching, decision-making, and using digital tools to monitor team performance and drive improvements.
    • Specialist Pathways: Learners may specialise in sectors like retail, hospitality, logistics, or healthcare depending on availability and interest. Employers may support additional training in human resources (HR), customer service, or compliance depending on business needs and leadership responsibilities.
    • Career-Ready Qualification: Upon completion (typically 18 months), apprentices earn a Level 3 qualification and are ready for roles such as team leader, shift supervisor, or operations coordinator, with progression opportunities into management roles or higher-level apprenticeships.

  • How is the course assessed?

This supervisory Apprenticeship is flexibly taught at either our London Road Campus or on-site to small groups on a day release basis, once a week. If you need to complete your functional skills, then this will be covered at college in a block week release.

In addition, you will be assessed in the workplace by your assessor and progress reviewed every 12 weeks with your employer. In addition, you will be required to sit an End Point Assessment, towards the final stages of your programme, which will ensure you have obtained the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to carry out your role effectively.

  • Additional Notes

Typically, this Supervisory Apprenticeship will take 18 months to complete.

  • What do I do next?

To be an apprentice, you will need an employer who can offer you a specific role relevant to this apprenticeship and release you for your training. Once you have an employer in place, you can apply online. If after reading this fact sheet, you are still undecided about the course most suitable for you, please drop into one of our advice events, ring the Apprenticeship Team on 01743 653444 or email apprenticeships@shrewsbury.ac.uk
