Work Experience

The work experience team support all students seeking meaningful work experience opportunities. The team source a wide range of companies tailored to students’ interests, availability and location. Work experience is essential for developing confidence, gaining valuable employability skills, identifying possible career paths, enhancing CVs and personal statements, and securing apprenticeships and part-time jobs. Opportunities include employer visits, shadowing opportunities, block placements or regular placements throughout the year. The team organises over 1400 placements annually and has built solid relationships with local and national employers.

Key benefits of work placements.

  • Develops essential skills – Work placements help students to develop a range of skills essential for the workplace, such as communication, organisation, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Provides content for CVs, personal statements and job applications – Placements in a real workplace relevant to the college course provide useful content for future applications and can help students stand out from others.
  • Increases independence and self-confidence – On placement, students will work with new people and may work independently on tasks or contribute to the team on specific projects.
  • Helps support career decisions - A placement provides insight into a specific sector and different job roles, and can be key in making career choices.

Industry Placements (T Levels)

Industry Placements offer employers a superb opportunity to test drive the talent of Level 3 students, undertaking T Level courses, during a minimum 315-hour placement over 45-60 days throughout the academic year. Employers offer students a placement that directly relates to their study programme, and students benefit from embedding their college-based learning in real-time employer projects. For employers, it is a useful tool in resource planning, with Industry Placements often developing into an apprenticeship or paid employment opportunities.

We advertise local, seasonal, part-time, and full-time vacancies through the SC Jobshop. We can also provide expert advice on applying for jobs, writing CVs, and developing your interview skills to maximise your chances of success. Don’t miss out on our annual jobs fair because it gives you direct access to recruiters.

Industry partnerships and opportunities

At Shrewsbury College, you’ll have access to a fantastic range of real‑world experiences thanks to our strong partnerships with local, national and international organisations.

Through our link with The Shrewsbury Club, students can access work experience, placements and part-time employment opportunities in areas including sport, business, catering, finance, therapies, hair, computing and marketing. Students may also gain experience at major events such as the AEGON Tennis Tournament.

Our partnership with The Wrekin Housing Group offers valuable insight into the world of work through volunteering, interview workshops, work experience and apprenticeship opportunities. Students can also engage in community projects and receive guidance on future housing and independent living.

For those seeking international experience, our Erasmus+ partnership with City Unity College in Athens provides overseas work placements in Business, Hospitality, Catering, and Travel & Tourism.

In addition, Young Enterprise Shropshire supports students in developing practical business skills and entrepreneurial thinking through hands-on programmes.
