  • Who is it for?

Studying Health, Social Care and Education at Shrewsbury College can lead to a rewarding career. Whichever area of the sector students choose to work in, it is essential that they have good skills and the necessary qualifications.

It is a foundation course for those who are undecided on the direction which they want to pursue a career in. This course will prepare the student for the Level 2 in either Supporting Teaching and Learning, Early Years Practitioner or Health and Social Care.

Our specialist teachers will guide students through the course requirements and help them to develop strong communication skills. Students will need to be enthusiastic, show positive behaviour, and be prepared to work hard for their qualification.

  • Entry Requirements

A minimum of two GCSEs at Grade 2, including English.

  • What does the course involve?

Students will study a range of units, including:
    • Human growth and development
    • Equality and inclusion
    • Safeguarding
    • Principles and values.

All of these units are designed to give students the knowledge and understanding that they will need to progress academically and to enable them to have the employability skills required to work in those sectors.

  • How is the course assessed?

The course involves a range of assessment approaches. Students might be involved in producing an assessed portfolio, completing written assignments, or creating assessed visual work.

  • Additional Notes

If students complete the Level 1 Diploma, one week of work experience and the necessary English and Maths qualifications, they could progress to a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care, Early Years or Supporting Teaching and Learning.

  • Other Details

We encourage all Level 1 Diploma students to complete one week of work experience to put the knowledge they will have developed over the duration of the course into practice.

  • What do I do next?

You can apply online via the APPLY button. You can also apply for a second, alternative programme of study such as A Levels via a separate application. If after reading this factsheet, you are still undecided about the course most suitable for you, please drop into one of our open evenings, ring the Admissions Department on 01743 653111, or email admissions@scg.ac.uk
