Masterchef Final: Catering students impress at STFC
The final of the Shrewsbury College MasterChef competition took place at the Greenhous Meadow this Monday.
In front of a panel of three judges made up of Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon, chief executive Matt Williams and head chef Ryan Leonard, the two teams, made up three of Hospitality and Catering students, supplied a main dish and a desert for each to sample.
The winning team was made up of Rachel Empson, 18, Laura Ingram, 18, and Alex Fielding, 18, with their Chicken Chasseur main and Profiterole desert.
Their dish will now be served at Saturday's upcoming Shrewsbury Town fixture when they entertain Hartlepool United.
Community Sports Trust manager Jamie Edwards was delighted at the success of the competition.
"We ran some qualifiers up at Shrewsbury College before Christmas and the result are these two exceptional teams making it here to the final" said Jamie.
"It's a great chance for the students to build on their CV and we feel it really gives the students some vital experience outside of college.
“It has been a great experience for all concerned."
Steve Poole, chef tutor at Shrewsbury College, was extremely proud of his students, he said: "I think both teams have produced some top-notch food that many top restaurants in the area would love to serve.”
"All our ingredients are fresh and people can sample similar food like this in our Origins restaurant at Shrewsbury College."
Chief executive Matt Williams insisted that picking a winner was a very tough decision.
"The standard was very high and they are all a credit to their college," said Matt.
"We had to pick a winner based on certain elements like what the chairman and the time of the year and the chicken chasseur dish seemed to tick those boxes.
"Ideally the students here today can use this experience as a way into full-time employment."
The runners-up team consisting of Sarah Dillow, 19, Kirby Hamilton, 18, and Aaron Tiernan, 19, did not leave empty handed, with Matt offering hospitality tickets for Saturday's encounter with Hartlepool as well as work experience at the club in the future.
