After leaving school with minimal qualifications, returning to further education was a big undertaking for me, but Shrewsbury College gave me plenty of support. Working in a pharmacy is rewarding and taking the nutrition and health course has been the key to the job I love, giving me the knowledge and confidence to help others and make a difference.

I have really enjoyed Work Ready as it has taught me a lot of life skills and the work experience has definitely helped me. I wanted to work in a shop, but after doing work experience I have decided that wasn’t right for me, so now I have started work experience in a hairdressers and I know that’s what I want to do in future.

I would highly recommend the apprenticeship route, combining the practical experience of work with studying.  The staff at RMW Electrical Services have taught me so much and the tutors at College are great. I’ve learnt a lot about electrics, of course, but also people skills, dealing with a variety of people on site. It’s very different from school - a really motivating way to learn.

I returned to College to do the Access to Higher Education course as my qualifications were 'too old' to be counted towards a University application. I want to become a trained Social Worker and am now starting a degree. I thought the finances might be an issue but the Advanced Learner Loan - which gets written off once I complete my degree - has been great.

Although there are colleges closer to home, this is the only one that does the specific combined course I wanted to do. The course is very different from school, there is a lot of practical work, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy! The best thing about the course is that I get to work with two different groups (hair and beauty), which gives the course some nice variation.

Being able to progress from the FD in Education to the full degree at the College is such a great opportunity for us, it means we can fit in our degrees around work and family lives and not spend time travelling long distances to another university. We really benefit from the small class sizes and the personalised, highly supportive staff.  It’s perfect.

It’s been a great experience at Shrewsbury College and I have learned lots and had many opportunities to perform in front of audiences and put on professional shows. I regularly go to Spain for some sun and thought it would be handy and polite to be able to speak a little Spanish. My main goal is to be a fashion designer and friends recommended this course. It was a little scary to start with and a bit more challenging than I thought, but it also gave me a lot of creative freedom. So far my favourite part of the course has been the end of year fashion show, as it was good to take part in a live show and to experience the fast paced, sometimes hectic, environment.

This course has been great for self-development. I have learnt that it is impossible to counsel people without knowing yourself and your own feelings in depth. The tutors have been extremely supportive and we get the chance to take part in out of classroom development and CPD.

The Apprenticeship has given me a lot more confidence in my role as a shift manager. I feel as though I now deal with situations in a more confident manner because of what I have learned during the Apprenticeship. I chose photography as a means to express myself. Photography as a medium has unlimited possibilities. When starting this course, I knew very little about photography but after just one week, I had learnt more in just one week than I had learnt in a year at my previous college. Every day is a chance to challenge yourself and you always come away learning something new. The classes are very friendly and everyone has their own style. Despite having our own styles everyone is open with each other and helps each other out with ways to improve or taking photos etc… The teacher is fantastic, very supportive and always helps you achieve above and beyond. Photography is your sight of the world, the only limitation for it is your mind.

I did Levels 1 and 2 here at the College, before progressing to Level 3. I wanted to do Level 3 so that I felt more confident for when I go and work in a salon. All the experience we get with working with clients in the Evolve Academy is great and I’ve done some work experience in the commercial salon, Evolve, which was great fun and I found it really helpful.

I normally struggle with coursework, but the tutors have been extremely supportive and have always helped when I’ve needed it. The practical side to the course is definitely my favourite aspect. This course has definitely set me up and made me ready to work in the industry.

I started my A Levels at sixth form but soon realised that my real passion lied in performing. I’ve really enjoyed my course here and have learnt a lot whilst having fun. I’ve previously had acting experience, but the shows I’ve done with the College have been a lot more challenging and therefore rewarding. Guys and Dolls has been the hardest so far, as I’ve also been involved with the choreography, but it’s definitely been worth all the hard work.

One of the best things about the course and College is the amount of support you get from tutors and peers. I’m progressing on to the HNC course at Shrewsbury College because I feel very settled here and it’s proven to be a great place to learn and give me the industry experience I need to progress onto drama schools in London.

I was encouraged to study A Levels by my parents but it wasn’t really the route I wanted to take. I want to be a mental health nurse so I decided to study Health and Social Care instead, as the hands-on practical aspect of the course is what I will need to progress into a career. I decided to enrol on the course at Shrewsbury College even though it isn’t the closest option for me because of its reputation and new facilities.

When I started I was using the college bus, which picked me up from Donnington, travel was never an issue and although the days are slightly longer, the ease of using the college bus definitely helped.

Before joining the HND course at Shrewsbury College I attended Liverpool Hope University for a year, where I studied Creative Performing Arts. I soon realised the course wasn’t right for me, so after much consideration I decided to join the Performing Arts HND course at Shrewsbury College. It is great that the college offers Higher Education courses locally and for me it has meant saving more money and having a more productive lifestyle.

Shrewsbury College isn’t the closest college to my home, but it is the only college in a commuting distance that offers this higher education course. The tutors are really approachable and give good, detailed explanations of topics. Our course provides opportunities to travel, and a trip to Athens was great fun whilst also giving us the opportunity to do work experience abroad. After completing our course we hope to apply for jobs on airlines.

The Access course has taught me so much not only in the classroom but outside. Skills such as time management (juggling childcare, self-directed study and work) that will be invaluable for my next level of study doing a nursing degree at Staffordshire University. The biggest achievement has been finally getting a GCSE grade C equivalent in maths, a subject I have always struggled with but now have. The course has been really hard but so worth it.

I run a cake making business from home and wanted to be able to offer something extra to my customers. I've found the first couple of weeks really good and have been able to put what I've learnt into practice. The tutor is helpful and we get a lot of support. It's handy that it's an evening course as I have two young children.

My husband has been trying to teach me for 13 years and I decided it was time to come to college! I've started my own beauty business  and I feel like the course has helped a lot. I can do my price list, my client list and my leaflets myself. I've really enjoyed the course and the tutor is very helpful.

I decided to come to Shrewsbury College after completing my A Levels. The AAT course will be a great boost for my CV when I start applying for university. We learn a lot in lessons and there is always someone to help if you’re struggling. Everyone on the course is amazing. We have a really good laugh and there is a real family feel.

I was recommended this course from a Tutor at the College who had previously done it. I was originally looking at Universities to study my PGCE, but when I found out that Shrewsbury College offer the same course - in a more convenient location, and at a great price - I applied straight away.
