Shrewsbury College gears up for glittering gala dinner launch of its new restaurant

A glittering gala dinner later this month will mark the official opening of Shrewsbury College’s new commercial restaurant, Origins featuring TASTE Kitchen.

Origins, forms part of a major £15million development at the London Road site and houses two industry-standard training kitchens, a production kitchen plus a new restaurant and bar, which deliver professional training in Catering and Hospitality.

On January 31, a glittering gala dinner featuring local food and drink, entertainment and a charity auction, will mark the official opening of the new facilities.

HEART of ENGLAND fine foods (HEFF) will also move its operations and TASTE Kitchen to the London Road site from February.

Specially invited guests will enjoy a five course dinner featuring produce from local suppliers and the special guest speaker will be former Catering and Hospitality Student Hannah Nugent.

Mrs Nugent is now the general manager at Jamie Oliver’s Restaurant in Birmingham and has taken several high profile international trips as part of her career. She will be sharing her experiences with staff and students as well as dinner guests.

Performing Arts student and table magician Koebe (CORR) Matthews, 17, from Whitchurch will entertain guests. There will also be music from singers Charlie Dean, 20, from Shrewsbury, also studying Performing Arts and Edward Brown, 18, of Baschurch, a Music Technology student.

A grand charity auction will raise funds for The British Red Cross and Severn Hospice and prices have been generously donated by Imagine Spa, Salop Leisure, Shrewsbury Town Football Club, Jamie Oliver’s Italian Restaurant, HEFF and The College.

In the run up to the event, Chris Bradley, chef and proprietor of Mr Underhills Michelin starred-restaurant in Ludlow, has agreed to run a master class with catering students at the College.

Students can study a wide range of courses in the facility from foundation learning to Level 3 and it also provides leisure courses for those interested in food skills.
Shrewsbury College students serve lunches and evening fine dining on several days of the week for Origins and TASTE Kitchen chefs will be offering daily breakfasts and evening meals across the weekend and during academic holidays.

Anyone can call in to the restaurant which can serve up to 80 covers, throughout the day and evening and corporate lunches, meetings and training events are also invited.

Regional food group HEFF, which works with hundreds of businesses across the Midlands to promote local food and drink, will be relocating all of its operations from Battlefield, including office staff and its Local Food Store, by March 2014.

Ted Coxon, Manager of Origins, said: “Although Origins opened in October and is already a popular venue, we are really excited to be officially launching not just the restaurant, but the fantastic industry standard training facilities we have here on-site.

“The students will have the opportunity to work alongside two commercial brands, and also the community and we are passionate about developing the next generation of award -winning chefs, restaurant entrepreneurs and front-of-house staff.”

Chief executive of HEFF, Karen Davies MBE, said: “This is an exciting time for our organisation as we move to a new, centrally located state of the art facility. Relocating to the College will enable us to develop the TASTE kitchen and Local Food store brands, ensuring that even more consumers can experience and enjoy the fabulous food and drink produced by our members.

“The move is strategically exciting as it will strengthen the links between education and the food industry.”
