Our students get involved in various activities alongside their studies including volunteering, fundraising and supporting events. Here’s a taste of what they’ve been up to recently...
Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Skills Festival
In January 2011, students from a variety of courses represented the College at the Aimhigher Skills festival in Telford. The interactive event was coordinated for school pupils to experience firsthand the courses on offer and talk to existing students about college life.
Fundraising for Westie ReHoming
In February 2011 Travel and Tourism students helped raise vital funds last week for canine charity, Westie ReHoming, by selling new and recycled jewellery, handmade cards and doggie accessories.
Shrewsbury College's Business Development Co-ordinator and Shropshire volunteer for the charity, Sandra Harris, wanted to express her thanks to Vicki Yearn, Odell Newport and Hollie Nasralla.
“The girls did a fantastic job, displaying and selling the items and even offering a gift-wrapping service. They raised grand total of £260 in just two hours and have even offered to help run another event to raise more funds.”
Viva la V - College students scoop awards
In February 2011 dedicated volunteers from Shrewsbury College were acknowledged last week for their outstanding achievements at the BTCV’s Viva la V! celebration event at Theatre Severn.
Students from Health and Social Care; Public Services; and Travel and Tourism were each presented with the prestigious awards by the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Kath Owen.
Presented awards included, ‘Commitment to Fundraising;’ ‘Commitment to College Volunteering’ and ‘Outstanding Commitment to an International Charity’ respectively. The College also scooped an ‘Outstanding Commitment to Volunteering’ award.
College staff and tutors have expressed their pride for the student’s hard work, commitment and achievements. Gina Cusack, Enrichment and Tutorial Coordinator, said “We initiated the volunteering programme in September 2009 and to-date around 900 students have volunteered for a variety of local, national and global projects. We are extremely proud and pleased with our student’s involvement and we have appreciated the support from the staff at Vinvolved.”
Paula Cleaver, Tutor for Public Services, said of her students, “They started the course with a lack of self esteem. As a result of their volunteering they now have loads of confidence and are keen to get involved in community activities.”
Guests at the event were treated to a fun-filled evening of entertainment, including Shrewsbury College Performing Arts student, Katie Brisbourne, of X Factor fame.
