Shrewsbury College Sports Tutor set to play in qualifying round of the Europa League

A Sports teacher from Shrewsbury College is set to play in the Europa League qualifiers again this summer.

Andy Jones will be playing against one of Europe’s top teams with his Airbus UK side once again after making it through the first qualifying round of the Europa League. Andy, who is the current captain of the Airbus UK side, could be drawn to face Rosenburg, Hajduk Split, Brondby, Red Star Belgrade or even Premier League side, West Ham United.

Andy was headhunted for the Welsh side last year, where he first played in a Europa league qualifier and has since been playing with the team alongside his teaching role at the College.

He said: “It’s another amazing experience to build on last year’s narrow defeat in Norway and one in which I can’t wait for. The opportunity to play in Europe again is something that you never expect to be involved in once never mind twice!

“I would love another trip to a county in which I haven’t been or to play West Ham would obviously be a massive draw for us. Either way it’s always good to come back and share my experiences with my students – who are all very supportive.”

Andy has also played for AFC Telford and previously coached the under 15s and 16s at The Centre of Excellence at Shrewsbury Town Football Club. He is also due to start his UEFA A license this year.

“I recently decided I wanted to get my UEFA A license for professional development and to be able to bring the knowledge I learn back into my teaching,” he added. “The A license is one of the highest accolades you can receive in coaching and is something that excites me and one in which I am looking forward to starting.

“It’s really important for me to keep my professional standards up so I can keep my knowledge up-to-date and also offer the students I teach some inspiration about where they can go and what they can achieve.”

Jackie Swan, Curriculum Leader for Sport, said: “Andy is a fantastic tutor and a fantastic ambassador for the College. He continually inspires his students and fellow colleagues and takes all of his responsibilities seriously. We are really impressed with his achievements and are very proud of him.”
