A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language. You must be able to play an instrument or sing to grade 4 standard or higher. This does not mean you need to have taken any graded exams, but if no graded exam results are available, you will be required to audition.
The course involves performing, composing, listening to and analysing music. You will improve your skills as a performer and composer studying both ‘classical’ and ‘popular’ styles of music. You will listen to and analyse a wide variety of music, developing a more informed appreciation of how, and why, it was written. Examples of the music you will study: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Abba, Stevie Wonder, Oasis, Metallica, Haydn, Mozart, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Debussy and Stravinsky.
As a composer, you will learn techniques to create effective music in different styles. Most importantly, you will learn the ‘mechanics of music’ which will help you to become a better musician. In class we will analyse set and sample works, teach you a composition technique to try at home, or practice theory and listening exercises. You must be able to understand standard music notation.
Recent alumni have gone on to study at the UK’s most prestigious conservatoires (RNCM, RAM, Guildhall, LSM), universities (Durham, Cambridge, Bristol, Manchester), and popular music Institutes (BIMM, ICMP.) Previous students have also gained places in the National Youth Orchestra.
Students taking Music A Level are eligible for a £100 music bursary for the first 5 terms of the A Level course. You will be part of our exciting programme of musical and drama activities ‘MaDA’ working with like-minded creative students. Visiting a Broadway show as part of the New York trip is an opportunity for you to consider and discuss the music industry both on stage and behind the scenes.
Our long standing relationship with Shropshire Music Service means that they are able to offer a very competitive fee structure for lessons and we fully support their mission to provide, develop and support the highest quality of music education in Shropshire. To further this ambition, SMS offer their own bursary scheme which supplements individual lessons by 10 minutes for instrumentalists or vocalists who are already performing at Grade 5 or above or who are part of a Shropshire Music Service ensemble.
A Level Music (History and Geography)
Previous Institution: Priory School
I am thankful for the excellent music teaching I have received, both at the College and from my instrumental teachers. I am going to study Music at Cambridge University and am excited to continue expanding my musical knowledge. I feel very privileged to be going to such a prestigious university!
A Level Music (Business, Economics, Psychology)
Previous school: Church Stretton School
I will study Music at Durham University and then do a PGCE as I would like to become a college Music teacher. This has been inspired by the great teachers at SCG and all the hard work they have put in to help me. I learnt composition and theory and truly developed my skills as a Musician. I play classical guitar and never thought I’d be able to consider it as a future career. I also take part in the MaDA performances and am a member of the college choir - these are great confidence builders.
