Entry requirements

You will need to have completed a minimum of a Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Counselling Skills.

Who is it for?

This course of study will provide you with an overview of the key concepts of cognitive-behavioural theory and allow you to explore the particular opportunities and challenges of working with clients in this model. This unit aims to enable you to develop a theoretical and practical understanding of a cognitive-behavioural approach.

What does the course involve?

You will have the opportunity to review and clarify the contributions of key theorists such as: Pavlov and Classical Conditioning, John Watson and phobias, Wolpe and systematic desensitisation, Skinner and behaviour therapy, Ellis and REBT, Beck and cognitive therapy. You will develop your understanding of the 'cognitive behavioural approach' to: the nature and development of human beings, the development and perpetuation of psychological problems, the nature and process of therapeutic change, the process of counselling practice. You will also develop your skills as a CBT practitioner through skills practice in triads.

How is the Course Assessed?

Summative assessment will be via an internally set and marked discussion paper of 4500-5000 words in length.
