Shrewsbury College Students Celebrate EU Erasmus Programme

As the country is poised to vote on whether the UK should remain within the EU, a group of Shrewsbury College students celebrates one element of the union which has certainly worked in their favour.

Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport. Organisations are invited to apply each year to undertake creative and worthwhile activities.

For the fifth year running, Shrewsbury College was a successful bidder in a highly competitive process, receiving funding for its Tourism, Hospitality and Catering students to undertake a trip to Athens in October 2015 to work in a range of settings including hotels and restaurants.

Assistant Principal - Quality and Curriculum Support, Chris Pemberton comments: “This EU funded programme has been an incredible experience for the students.  The objective of the project is to raise aspirations, broaden horizons, encourage students to work in the EU and improve employment prospects.   The College has found that from the group of students that take part, a higher percentage than average go on to study at university and/ or work abroad.”

To celebrate the successful trip, students organised a dinner in the College restaurant, Origins, on Tuesday evening.  Catering students prepared a Greek meal, which was served by the participating students to an appreciative crowd.

Level 3 Chef Diploma student, Chris Taylor explains: “It was an amazing experience. We spent two weeks at the catering college in Athens and learnt so many new ways of doing things.  We exchanged lots of ideas and techniques with each other and learnt a lot about their way of life. The Greek hosts were so friendly and showed us around.  It was great fun and will be so good on our CVs.”

The College has recently been granted funding by Erasmus for a further two years, extending the two week programme to include business students and apprentices.
