Shrewsbury College work in partnership with local businesses to offer employment opportunities

The childcare industry is rapidly growing. There are around 12,000 nurseries in the UK, employing nearly 200,000 people.

Jobs in Childcare are competitive and with constant processes and obstacles being implemented, it takes more than the love of working with children to succeed.

But Shrewsbury College is making a career in the industry more achievable, with over 95% of Childcare students gaining employment straight from college or progressing to university.

“Studying childcare requires commitment, enthusiasm, creativity and imagination,” explained Leah Griffiths, Care Tutor. “Each year, upon completion of the level 3 Early Years Educator qualification, nearly all of our students are successful in gaining employment or progressing to higher education. This year 100% of our students have either already gained employment, have work lined up or are progressing to university - which is a fantastic achievement.”

One reason the students are so successful on the course, is the college’s emphasis on work placement opportunities and the importance of gaining as much industry experience as possible.

Leah continued: “We work closely with over 60 nurseries and schools throughout Shropshire, including Mereside CE Primary School, Little Explorers in Copthorne and Explorers at Sundorne. This gives students valuable vocational experience within the sector. We pride ourselves on the relationships we build with nurseries and schools and more often than not these relationships lead to further work opportunities for our students.”

One nursery the College has close ties with is Busy Bees in Shrewsbury, who take on work placement students each year and have also employed students from the College.

The nursery, which is located on Shrewsbury Business Park, currently employs three former students, Cally Roberts, Sherie King and Casey White.

Leah said: “We are proud to celebrate the success of all of our students. In particular, we would like to commend the success of Cally, Sherie and Casey, who have all gained Apprenticeship placements at Busy Bees nursery in Shrewsbury following on from their time at Shrewsbury College. Both Cally and Casey have stepped onto the management ladder and are working as room assistant leaders.”

Jill Beckett, nursery manager at Busy Bees nursery in Shrewsbury, said: “Cally, Sherie and Casey have all hit the ground running in their time with us. Their energy and enthusiasm when working with the children is second-to-none. Casey recently completed her Level 3 in Leadership and Management, which is just one of the variety of apprenticeship courses we offer, run and facilitated by the Busy Bees Training Academy. Our three Apprentices are a fantastic example of the opportunities open to people looking to progress – since completing her Level 3, Casey has been promoted to assistant room manager.
“At Busy Bees, we provide a number of training and apprenticeship opportunities for both school leavers and adult learners to progress. If you’re looking for an extremely rewarding role, love children and have the enthusiasm and creativity to help children develop into wonderful young adults, then we want to hear from you.”
