Students Inspired by Industry Professionals during ‘Careers Week’

Shrewsbury College hosted its annual ‘Careers Week’ with the aim of inspiring and preparing students for the world of work.

Over 20 speakers from a variety of businesses and industries from across Shropshire, including; Mosaic Spa and Health club, The Hive, Greenhous group, Caterpillar, Capgemini, Shrewsbury Town FC Community Trust and The Army, were invited in to the College to talk to the students about their experiences in industry and the career choices they made.

Helen Hurdley, Operations Team Leader, coordinated Careers Week with Lorraine Burrage, Agency Project co-ordinator. Helen said: “We always receive great feedback from our students about this event. I think they really value the opportunity to hear from, and ask questions to successful people who are working in the industries they hope to go into.

“We work closely with a lot of local businesses and we value our partnerships and the support they give to the College and our students and Careers Week is another opportunity where our students can benefit from these partnerships. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our guest speakers and those involved in the event - and we hope our students have taken away some invaluable information.”

Ben Rubery, from Capgemini - who work in consulting, technology and outsourcing services and run successful Apprenticeship programmes - was invited in to speak to the Computing students.

He said: “It was great to be part of Shrewsbury College’s Careers Week. I had fun speaking with the students, who are all so passionate about pursuing a career in computing.

“We recognise that apprentices bring a huge amount of value to our business and Shrewsbury College’s Careers Week was a great opportunity to engage with the next generation of talent.”

Sophie Thorne, Manager of Image Health Spa at The Shrewsbury Club, studied Hair & Beauty 8 years ago, before progressing to university to study International Spa Management. She said: “I was happy to come in and speak to the students during careers week. I was able to talk about my experiences as a trainee and the progressions routes I’ve taken since leaving the college, which led me to be the spa manager at ImagineSpa.

Level 3 Beauty student, Katie Durham, attended the talk by Sophie Thorne. She said: “I think we all found it really interesting and useful to hear from someone who works in the beauty industry.

“What was really interesting for me was to hear the different routes you can take. Sophie has done a lot of different things and took routes you might not expect you can take. I liked hearing about her experience with university.”
