College offers GCSE advice and alternative study to A Levels

Shrewsbury College is advising disappointed school leavers not to panic if they didn’t get the GCSE grades they were expecting yesterday.

“Many students who choose to come here after GCSEs to study Level 3 vocational courses, go on to university,” said Marketing Manager at the College, Charmian Turner. “A Level 3 vocational course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and offers students of all abilities hands-on experience in a wide range of subjects.”

“Many of our students have been successful in getting into the top Universities for their specialist subjects and several have gained scholarships for their academic achievement.”

Art & Design student Matt Robinson will read 3D Design in September at the prestigious Falmouth College University Art School. “My course at Shrewsbury College was really eye opening for me,” said Matt. “It put me on a path and gave me direction. I discovered that 3D design is something that I’m extremely passionate about. Falmouth is a natural progression from where I am now. Shrewsbury College has opened doors for me and I’m excited about what the future may bring.”

Childcare student Sarah Burgess gained a place on Liverpool John Moore’s Dream Achiever’s scholarship scheme. “I was offered the scholarship at university based on my high UCAS tariff and my voluntary work. My course also helped me to secure a job as a play leader during the summer holidays, working with children on the autistic spectrum.”

“Apprenticeships are another option to consider,” said Mrs Turner. “With fierce competition for jobs there’s never been a better time to have marketable skills. Apprentices can earn whilst they are learning and gain recognised qualifications as they work. Since completing their Apprenticeships, some of our students are now working all over the world including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica.”

“It’s not too late to apply. There are still some places remaining on full-time courses and Apprenticeships. If you’re not sure what to do next and are considering your options, come along to one of our upcoming opening evenings.”

The College’s London Road campus will be open from 5-7pm on Tuesday 4, Thursday 6 and Tuesday 11 September, with tutors and support staff on hand to offer advice on all courses.
