College wallpapering speed kings aim for new world record

Two Shrewsbury College lecturers who lost their British wallpapering speed record six months ago will look to win it back later this month on the opening day of The Great British Home Show 2012.

Barry Mason and Richard Tart, who teach painting and decorating at the College’s London Road campus, hit the headlines when they smashed the world record time for wallpapering, recording a time of just 1 minute 26.21 seconds for hanging three pieces of wallpaper.

“But all that changed when our record was broken in November by two guys at a painting and decorating show,” said Barry. “We’re determined to win the title back on 31 May.”

“We’re really looking forward to the day, we enjoy it and it acts as a little inspiration for the students we teach.”

The wallpapering duo will be accompanied by one of their star students Kim Horner, 18, who has turned her career prospects around after joining the course.

"Kim is a great example to any female considering a career in the construction industry," said Barry.

Barry, Richard and Kim will run workshops over all five days of The Great British Home Show at Glow, Bluewater, to demonstrate different painting and decorating techniques.

The event will be officially opened by DIY celebrity Craig Phillips and BBC’s DIY SOS designer Oliver Heath.
