A Computing and IT student has come up with a plan to build a “super computer” after a generous donation of 10 redundant machines from Shrewsbury College.

Damien Hinton approached his tutors for the kit to develop a "cluster" computing project at home.  "A cluster computer is where you get several smaller computers, wire them up through a network and then use special software to make them talk to each other, creating one giant computer!” said Damien.

College staff were so impressed by Damien's proposal that it was agreed he could have the equipment for the project. Robin Breakwell, Technical & Information Services Manager, said: “This isn’t something that we would usually do, but it is such a unique project and Damien was very clear about what he wants to achieve.”

"We will follow the project with keen anticipation," he added.
