Bid to boost apprenticeships

Shrewsbury College has taken on the ambitious challenge of generating 100 Apprenticeship placements in local businesses within the next 100 days.

As part of the challenge the College has vowed to recruit, train and guide employers throughout the whole process, whether their company is public or private, large or small.

John Butler from McPhillips Ltd, Wellington, has employed apprentices for the past 12 years.

“The cost of an apprentice is quite negligible when you consider the government grants available and in a few years you have a fully trained young person with all the right qualifications and credentials,” he said.

“Apprenticeships have been so successful at McPhillips that 20 percent of the company’s workforce are either qualified or current apprentices.

Ian Jervis, Head of Business Development at Shrewsbury College, said: “With over 350 employers currently working with us across a broad range of sectors, we are raring to go with this latest challenge.”

“The College was praised during its recent Ofsted inspection for the way it works with employers and understands their needs,” he added.
