Entry requirements

This course runs at our English Bridge Campus.

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. However, learners may find it helpful if they've already achieved a Level 1 qualification.

Who is it for?

This qualification is designed for learners aged post 16 who wish to develop skills and knowledge in craft.

What does the course involve?

Art & Design - looking at interior designs, how to layout a room (setting you a room to design i.e. a bedroom). You will be given a floorplan of a room and asked to design the interior. Choosing fabrics, wallpaper, paints, lighting, furniture etc to fit that room layout. Thinking about storage and practical uses, the flow of the room and using every available space. You will produce a large mood board using techniques and ideas to explain your design.

Heritage & traditional craft - upholstery looking at what furniture to put in their room. This could be a single chair for a bedroom, a 3 piece suite for a lounge etc. You can then learn techniques and produce a final chair or footstool for assessment.

Textiles - designing and making cushions, bedding, curtains, roman blinds and other soft furnishings to put in your room. Looking at colour, texture, pattern and shapes to fit your design. They will produce one of these pieces to showcase using the techniques learnt.

Construction - to construct a piece to showcase in their room. This could be a sculpture, a 3D piece of artwork, a piece of furniture or 3D model of their room. This is open to the student's interpretation of their overall design. They must also draw together all their design elements and create a corner of that room.

The overall aim is to produce a corner of your room, using wallpaper, lights, fabrics and furniture to showcase their interior design. (They could utilise different corners throughout the art block and hang any wallpaper they have chosen or designed themselves using blue tack or tape so it can be easily removed when no longer required. Or alternatively (and with any permissions required), redecorate their own bedroom and show photographic evidence of their final piece).

Additional qualification

You can progress on to study Extended Certificate Level 3.

How is the course assessed?

To be awarded the NCFE 2 Certificate Creative Craft learners are required to successfully complete 4 mandatory units.
