Entry requirements

No previous experience is required, just a keen interest in the subject.

Who is it for?

This course if for anyone with an interest in Ceramics and Clay. It covers a wide area of specialised Ceramic making, building techniques and surface decoration. It encourages creative exploration and experimentation within these processes. Current contemporary and traditional ceramic artists will be researched. Further courses may be available later in the year your tutor will be able to advise you on next steps.

What does the course involve?

The course will mainly be practical based work with some theory. You will produce a body of work showing contextual influences. You will have a basic introduction to different clays and their suitability for different techniques. You will use your own ideas and design concepts to apply a variety of building and decorative techniques to a project brief creating unique pieces.

Techniques covered within the course will include:-

Slab Building; Coiling; Press moulding; Pinch pots; Basic Sculpture; Surface texture techniques including Sgraffito; Decorative Tiles, Incising, Impressing and Piercing; Slip Trailing and surface decorating including Feathering and Marbling; Glazing techniques, use of stains and oxides; Kiln Procedures, Health and workshop safety; How to professionally photograph your work.

How is the course assessed?

No formative assessment, however group discussions and one to one tutor guidance will be given to evaluate work for further progression through the course.

Additional costs

Clay will be charged at pre- kiln fired weight per piece. This includes all firings. Advice will be given by tutor.

Additional notes

Apron and towel required at each session. Suitable clothing/ footware to be worn. Basic tools will initially be provided, advice will be given on additional items required by tutor.
