Entry requirements

Pre-entry requirements are the Award in Education and Training or equivalent. Additionally, you should hold an advanced level qualification (minimum level 3) in the subject area you wish to teach. Alternatively you may provide verified significant industrial, professional or commercial experience. You will also need to demonstrate a good level of English and Maths skills and preferably a level 2 qualification in English/literacy.

Who is it for?

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is an exciting step into the first formal stage of a teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement to support and develop skills. It is an 'in service' qualification designed for those currently working or aspiring to work as teachers/trainers in England. The qualification can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, including:

  • Individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification
  • Individuals who are currently teaching and training who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification
  • Individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification*
  • All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service need to have access to 30 hours of teaching or training over the period of the course. This qualification is also suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment. *Those who have achieved an IQA award may be able to claim RPL for specific units.

    What does the course involve?

    Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will achieve a fundamental and valuable understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to requirements around legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and most importantly, meeting the needs of learners. Candidates will develop practical skills that will enable them to work in a wide range of teaching and learning contexts. They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments to enable them to plan, design and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. They will also be able to effectively assess learning through the use a wide range of appropriate resources which support effective learning and achievement for individual learners.

    Additional qualification

    GCSE C or above in English and maths or be willing to work towards achieving a level 2 in both subjects

    How is the course assessed?

    Assessment will be through the form of assignments and three required observations throughout the programme to support the 30 hours required teaching
