Shrewsbury College students serve up a treat for charity

Ben O'Neill and Olivia Price, who are both business students at Shrewsbury College were asked to organise a dinner in aid of the Harry Johnson Trust – and the event raised more than £1,000.

The pair teamed up with a wine expert and members of the college's catering department to stage a dinner, which was held in Origin's Restaurant this week.

Frank Maltby, from Waitrose Newport supplied the wine on the night and during the evening he told diners about each wine, explaining their taste and origin.

Ben said: "Myself and Olivia were tasked with doing a business event for our course – we are studying level 3 business.

"We chose to do the event for the Harry Johnson Trust as Olivia had connections with Sally Johnson, who is the mother of Harry.

"Instead of just doing a charity dinner at a restaurant we decided to add a wine tasting element to the evening, and this was supplied by Frank Maltby.

"The food was cooked and served by college students on the front of house and cooking courses offered by the college. They were overseen by a chef lecturer Steve Poole.

"We raised over £1,000 with a large anonymous donation of £150. Over 60 people attended and we have been bombarded with 'thank yous'. During the evening, we had speeches from Sally, Gill Cox our head of department and the student events ambassador at Shrewsbury College, Phil Castle."

Sally Johnson, from the Harry Johnson Trust said: "It was a wonderful company and wonderful food. We had amazing service and a huge thank you to Ben and Olivia for raising over £1,000."
