National Skill Build Competition Recognises Local Talent

Two former Shrewsbury College students have qualified for the prestigious national finals of the UK SkillBuild competition, being held at Birmingham’s NEC later this month.

The competition, which has been running for over 45 years, sees the best in construction talent compete against each other to be crowned the SkillBuild winner in their chosen trade.

Following a series of challenging heats earlier this year, Zak Clay (21), who co-owns Holland and Clay Plumbing and Heating, became one of just eight plumbers selected from across the UK. Zak will compete at the SkillPLUMB UK final - a three day practical task on 17-19 November.

SkillPLUMB organiser, Neil Collishaw of BPEC, said: “The standard of work has been really high this year and we’re looking forward to seeing the best young apprentices of the industry battle it out to be named champion of the UK.”

Amanda Connor, former Shrewsbury College Level 2 Painting and Decorating student, also qualified for the national finals in the painting and decorating category.
