Local band ‘The Sun Hotel’ to launch official EP
A group of local musicians are currently touring the West Midlands – ahead of the release of their official EP.
The Sun Hotel, a group of three Music students, who met whilst studying at Shrewsbury College, recorded their second EP at Magic Garden Studios, Wolverhampton, earlier this year. The album, ‘A Quest for Knowledge’, is due to be released May 13, and the band have been on the road touring venues across Shropshire, the West Midlands and Leicester.
Joe Warham, 20, Jon Hamer, 18, and Ed Brown, 20, met at the College three years ago whilst studying the Level 3 Music Technology course. Joe and Jon have continued at the College to study HNC in Music Production.
Jon said: “Recording our ep with Gavin Monaghan from Magic Garden Studios, was great fun. The team there really know what they are doing and because we didn’t have to get involved with the producing side of things, we were able to get really stuck into making the music.
“We spent four days in Wolverhampton doing the recording and we’re really proud of what we created. Our first single, ‘Bad News’ has now been released and is available on iTunes. We also have an official music video, which we had never done before - it was created by a group of Glyndwr University Media students.”
The band have already played various venues performing new music from their album, and are due to host their EP launch on Friday 13, May, at The Hole in the Wall, Shrewsbury.
“We’ve done quite a lot of gigs now, both as students with the College and separately as The Sun Hotel.” Explained Ed.
“We all love playing live and being able to play at well-known venues, such as The Shed, in Leicester, where the likes of Kasabian have played, has been great. Our music isn’t one specific genre, but its main influence is Indie.”
The band say that the College has played a vital role in the bands existence.
Joe said: “The College is where we all met, so without it, we wouldn’t be playing together in a band.”
“We’ve have a lot of creative freedom here and been able to experiment. We can all play instruments, but the course has helped us to understand the industry more and to get to learn more of the technical skills involved in producing.
“Jon and I wanted to progress to the HNC so that we could explore music production more. It’s allowed us to be more comfortable and has given us a good start for when we leave.”
The band plan on moving to Liverpool together on completion of the course, this summer in the hope of pursuing their music careers.
