Shropshire Football Association and Shrewsbury College form unique educational partnership

Shrewsbury College is set to play host to a range of Shropshire Football Association (SFA) courses and in return the SFA will provide two free college places for outstanding students.

The two organisations have sealed the deal on the training agreement, which will see a number of important sports development courses run at the College, including those which cover Safeguarding, Coaching and Refereeing.

The SFA approached the College about basing these courses on its London Road site because of its excellent sports facilities and commitment to working with the community. Football groups and organisations will be able to take training and sports qualifications needed to enable them to safely run community football groups, at the College.

In return, for every course run by the SFA at the College, they will fund the places of two students who are doing well and excelling on their course. The chosen students will be able to use this endorsement of their hard work on applications in their future.

The SFA will also base its Football Futures Programme for 14-25year-olds at the College, which encourages young people to become a part of the football industry by volunteering and offering support to community groups, enabling them to become Football Association representatives. Students will also be able to act as volunteers and stewards at matches taking place at the College to get extra experience.

Chief Executive of the SFA, Roy Waterfield, said: “The commitment the College is making to both its students and the wider community is obvious and should be recognised by both Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council.

“They are continually investing in facilities and not all organisations of this type are doing this. They are a credit to the town and we are happy to be working alongside them.”

Catherine Armstrong, Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Operations at Shrewsbury College, said: “It’s a fantastic coup for us to be working with the SFA and that they think so highly of our students, community work and facilities.

“To have two sports students courses funded by the SFA will also be a real incentive for the students to work hard and excel and be a huge selling point for them as they go forward in their educational or professional careers.”
