Arts and Culture trip for Higher Education students

A group of Higher Education (HE) students from Shrewsbury College have returned from Berlin, Germany’s capital and cultural centre, after a four-day Creative Arts and Media trip.

Using some of the funding from HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England), which was secured earlier in the year, the College was able to subsidies a trip for students studying Creative Arts and Media. As well as being an incentive, it also gave the students of different ages and backgrounds a chance to bond with one another and take inspiration from a variety of arts for upcoming course projects.

The trip was offered to students studying HNCs in Fashion, photography, 3 D Design, Art & Design, Music and Performing Arts.

Helen Fellows, the Higher Education Lead at Shrewsbury College, said: “As we are teaching all the HNC students together for some of their modules this year, we decided to use some of our funding from HEFCE to subsidies a trip we thought would not only appeal to the students on an educational level, but also give the group of students a chance to get to know each other better.

HE courses at Shrewsbury College have seen a boom with a 24% growth in first year numbers for the 2015/16 academic year.

“The funding we received from HEFCE has allowed us to increase our provision this year, which meant the Creative Arts and Media department in particular saw significant growth. We hope to offer more educational trips for our HE students across the board, in the future,” added Helen

Each tutor developed individual itineraries for the trip, depending on their specialist area and the College organised trips for the whole group to attend.

Students visited a variety of museums and art galleries, as well as well-known city landmarks and memorial sites, including; the Helmut Newton Foundation exhibition, Brandenburg Gate, Academy of the Arts, DDR Museum, Holocaust Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie. The students also attended a performance of ‘The Wyld’ at Friedrichstadt-Palast theatre.

HNC Photography student, Gemma Palmer, 28, from Telford, said: “It was fantastic to have the opportunity to do photography in such a beautiful and interesting city, full of rich art and culture – I would love to do it all over again.”

Christian Lugtu, 19, from Shrewsbury, studying HNC Performing Arts, said: “I very much enjoyed the Berlin trip from the food to culture, to the architecture. I hung out with people who I hadn’t spoken to up until now.  I especially enjoyed the theatre and the performance of ‘The Wyld’, which as a performer I got a lot of out of. “
