Shrewsbury trainee decorator in the running for wallpaper hanging title

AN APPRENTICE decorator from Shropshire is in the running to win a prestigious national title.

Shrewsbury College student, Amanda Conner, 24, beat off competition from some of the best young talent in the country to be named as one of three finalists in the annual Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year contest.

Now she’ll face an anxious wait to find out the results at a gala event in Manchester next month.

The competition, organised by the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) and sponsored by Brewers, offers trainees the chance to demonstrate their expertise in a test of skill, nerve and precision.

Amanda, said: “I’m really pleased I entered and was delighted to be selected as a finalist.

“I’ve done well in other competitions that I’ve taken part in so I wanted to challenge myself again.

“I’m really looking forward to the gala dinner and winning the national title would be fantastic.”

Amanda is currently studying towards her Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating at Shrewsbury College.

She added: “I’ve always wanted to be an interior designer and throughout school I was advised to study painting and decorating as a starting block.

“I’ve stuck at it because I enjoy it so much.”

The head-to-head competition, which took place at The Hub in Doncaster, saw students decorating a booth while judges Dave Woods and Alan Pearson – current and past North East Regional Presidents of the PDA – assessed their work.

Neil Ogilvie, Chief Executive of the PDA, said: “I have been involved with this competition now for the last six years and each year the standard of workmanship and professionalism reaches a new level.

“Wallpapering is very different to painting and this contest provides students with the opportunity to test their skill set in a competition environment.

“These apprentices are our craftsmen and women of the future and it’s great to see people like Amanda prove that.”

The winner of the Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year award will be presented with a cash prize and goody bag from competition sponsor Brewers at the PDA National Conference and Gala Dinner at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel, Manchester on November 7.
