College students get West End training ahead of: A Night at the Musicals
Students from Shrewsbury College are preparing to hit the stage for next month’s production of, ‘A Night at the Musicals’.
With a cast of over 100 and ensembles from some of the most popular and much loved musicals, the show promises to be a night to remember.
Performing Arts students will be showcasing sections from Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat, Mary Poppins, Chicago, Nunsense, Disney’s Newsies, Les Miserables, Urinetown and Guys and Dolls. The upbeat musical numbers have been integrated into a romantic comedy with a script written by Vicki Duckett of Vested Interest - the College’s in-house theatre company.
The show will take place for two nights only at Shrewsbury’s, Theatre Severn, on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 April, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 and £8 concessions. To book, call 01743 281281 or visit www.theatresevern.co.uk
During rehearsals students were lucky enough to receive coaching from West End actor, Kane Parry, who also choreographed one of the musical theatre numbers for the show.
Kane recently played Robbie the Stockfish, in the West End production of Urinetown, and is currently rehearsing for the upcoming English National Opera’s production of Sweeny Todd, where he will be starring alongside Oscar winning actress, Emma Thompson and renowned Welsh opera singer, Bryn Terfel.
Mr Parry said: “I loved directing the students, they worked just like professionals listening to everything being asked of them by myself and teacher, Michael. I wish them all the best in their performances and I can't wait to see how it’s developed”.
Michael Jenkins, Performing Arts teacher at Shrewsbury College and director of the show, said: “The students have been working extremely hard and with the help from Vicki, who has written a spectacular script and Kane, whose expert advice and experience inspired the students, we believe we’ve created an extremely entertaining show. Audiences will also get a little taster of this summer’s production of Guys and Dolls.”
