We offer Higher Education locally with some courses starting in January!
With ever-increasing university fees, and the need for students to take out more cost-of-living loans, the option to study higher education locally has never been more appealing and Shrewsbury College is offering that solution.
Shrewsbury College has recently increased its Higher Education (HE) provision, introducing part-time Foundation Degrees (Fds) in Education, Health Studies, Counselling Theory and Practice, Manufacturing Technology and Electrical and Electronic Technology. Full-time Fds include Sports Coaching and Physical Education, Electrical and Electronic Technology and Fd in Manufacturing. This year HE student numbers at Shrewsbury College have increased by a significant 39%.
Helen Fellows, Higher Education and Education Lead, said: “Foundation Degrees, HNCs and HNDs in particular are employer-led and universities work closely with employers to ensure these qualifications equip students with the skills they need to be effective in the work place.
“With the addition of potentially saving thousands as opposed to studying further afield and the fact that you can continue to work in your chosen field whilst studying part-time can further supplement the cost. The new facilities as part of a £15m redevelopment, expert teachers and smaller more intimate class sizes means the advantages of studying locally really start to add up.”
In a recent Ofsted inspection, Shrewsbury College received Outstanding for its delivery of the PGCE course.
Sarah Gibbons, 25, from Shrewsbury, completed the PGCE course at the college last year, and is currently working as a Sport Lecturer, she said: “I studied both a HND Sport Studies and a PGCE at Shrewsbury College.
“I chose to study at Shrewsbury College because it was the cheaper option, I could work part-time alongside doing the course and I was able to get a lot of support from the College - I believe more so than I would have got at university,” she said.
“Because it was cheaper to study locally I didn’t need to take out a loan and I was able to obtain a grant for my course, which was a win win situation.
“I chose to return and do my PGCE after my HE course because I really enjoyed the College community and valued the friendships I made.
“Without doing the course, I would not have got the job that I am in. I would definitely recommend the course to others – the support is great and the college is fantastic.”
Shrewsbury College offers a range of routes for people to further their education or enhance their career progression. HE at the College has always been a successful and popular choice for students in Shropshire and now more than ever.
