Shrewsbury College is opening its doors next month and offering summer 2015 school -leavers a chance to find out more about the exciting opportunities and developments on offer.

The College is inviting those interested in studying full-time courses to attend its forthcoming open evening on Thursday, 13 November, from 4.30 – 7.30pm at London Road.

With the College’s three-year, £15 million development projects coming to a close, students entering further education next September will benefit from an all-inclusive, one-site campus, which includes the new Evolve commercial hair & beauty salon and associated new state-of-the-art training salons, Origins Restaurant and industry-standard training kitchens, a well-equipped Engineering and Construction block, two new music studios with Roland Academy status, a performance theatre, new 3G sports pitch and a completely new student zone which includes hot and cold food facilities, TV’s, social and relaxation areas and gaming stations and a new student learning centre.

The College has also enhanced its programmes of study and ways of combining different subjects, so now you can take a different approach to study, at whatever level you’re at. You can combine Level 3 vocational diplomas with an A level or a Level 2 diploma with GCSEs.

Jodi Ecclestone, from Telford, who recently completed her Extended Diploma in Performing Arts and is now studying at The Merseyside Dance and Drama Centre, said: “Even though the College wasn’t the closest to me I chose it because the course was the best I looked it. I spoke to Student Support as I qualified for financial help towards bus fares and meal tickets and also had help towards trips so I was able to enjoy the full College experience. I have found it really easy to make friends with like-minded people and I will miss everyone.”

The College was graded Good by Ofsted this summer – it’s best ever grade. The report said, “The focus on progression to employment is strong and is reflected, for example, in the increasing number of students aged 16 to 18 who secured jobs at the end of their studies in 2012/13. Over 90% of young people leaving the college last year had a positive outcome in terms of their recorded destinations.”
Steve Wain, Principal at Shrewsbury College said: “Recent figures published by UCAS show a 3% drop in the number of A Level candidates and a 16% increase in those taking BTECs in a year. The figures also show a 30% increase in those progressing to university after completing a BTEC qualification. UCASE has chosen to show that the number of high level entrants has doubled. There are signs that BTECS are helping students go on to university and A Levels are in decline. It’s is important for school students to be given as much knowledge and guidance for their futures as possible and we will be on hand during the evening to help and explain all of their options. Further education is changing and so is Shrewsbury College and there has never been a more exciting time to join us here at London Road.”

As well as full-time courses for school leavers, the College offers a wide range of Apprenticeships for anyone over the age of 16 and staff will be available to talk to anyone interested in one of these.

Subject presentations will be held throughout the evening including course information, progression and destination information. Visitors will also be able to attend talks about The Agency, which supports students to achieve and progress; students will be available for financial, transport, study support and enrichment opportunities.

Our new Origins Restaurant will be opening and complimentary refreshments will be served throughout the evening in the new Student Zone.
