A group of 16 and 17-year-olds from across Shrewsbury, including students from Shrewsbury College, have spent the Easter break taking part in a two week fun-packed activity project.

The programme which is run by The National Citizen Service Network (NCS), Shrewsbury Town Community Trust (STCT) and hosted at Shrewsbury College, gives young people the chance to take on new challenges, learn new skills and make a difference.

Jenny Hannah, from STCT, said: “The project offers a fantastic chance for young people in the area to take an active part in the community whilst building confidence, friendships and gaining experience.

“The group spent last week at PGL activity centre, where they took part in a variety of outdoor activities. This week they have been based at the College and have taken part in workshops hosted by guests, including Hope House, My Self Defence, Victim Support and Shropshire Young Carers.

“As part of the project the students now have four weeks to plan and execute a community event, to help raise money for charity. Past events have included, a football fun day at Shrewsbury Town football ground and cake sales and raffles in Shrewsbury town centre’s square.”

To complete the two weeks of activities, the group had to pitch their event ideas to special guests in a Dragons Den scenario. Shrewsbury MP, Daniel Kawczynski , Hope House CEO, Andy Goldsmith and fundraiser at Hope House, Lynsey Kilvert, were amongst the panel.

Teya Weaver, aged 16, Sport student at Shrewsbury College, said: “The last two weeks have been so much fun. It has given me the opportunity to meet new people and mix with peers who I wouldn’t normally get the chance to spend time with.

“Having to pitch our ideas to the MP and members of Hope House was exciting, and their feedback was invaluable. It feels good to be able to give something back and show that teenagers do care about their local community.”

The group are organising a fun day in Shrewsbury Town centre’s square in May. Dates will be announced shortly.

The NCS and STCT will be running the programme again in the summer holiday, with spaces still available.
