Shrewsbury College officially announces partnership with HEART of ENGLAND fine foods
Shrewsbury College’s management and Governors have rubber stamped a move which will see its new commercial restaurant, Origins, welcome the HEART of ENGLAND fine foods (HEFF) to the site from February 2014.
Origins, forms part of a major £15million development at the London Road site and houses two industry standard training kitchens, a production kitchen plus a restaurant and bar, which deliver professional training in Catering and Hospitality.
Students can study a wide range of courses in the facility from foundation learning to Level 3 and it also provides leisure courses for those interested in food skills.
Following the agreement, which will mean a development to the name “Origins featuring TASTE Kitchen,” HEFF will move its operations to the London Road site from February and an official gala dinner opening to celebrate the partnership will be held on January 31.
The plan will see Shrewsbury College students serving lunches and evening fine dining on several days of the week for Origins and TASTE Kitchen chefs will offer daily breakfasts and evening meals across the weekend and during academic holidays.
Anyone can call in to the restaurant which can serve up to 80 covers, throughout the day and evening and corporate lunches, meetings and training events are also invited.
Events and parties can also be accommodated and the College plans to extend its service in conjunction with the Performing Arts Theatre to provide dinner and drinks prior to any of the shows.
The regional food group, which works with hundreds of businesses across the Midlands to promote local food and drink, will be relocating all of its operations from Battlefield, including office staff and its Local Food Store, by March 2014.
The new site is more centrally located and offers more space. More staff will be required to work at both the shop and in the TASTE Kitchen, with several jobs expected to be created in the coming months including new chef and front of house posts.
Steve Wain, Principal at Shrewsbury College, said: “We are delighted to have this exciting new venture to launch 2014 at the College. This move is an excellent one for both our students, who will be given the opportunity to work alongside two commercial brands, and also the community to enjoy the atmosphere as we work to develop the next generation of award-winning chefs, restaurant entrepreneurs and front-of-house staff.
“The Board of Governors and I felt strongly that this partnership would not only ensure HEFF and its wealth of expertise in the food and drink sector stayed in Shropshire, but also would hugely benefit our students as we prepare them for life after college.”
Chief executive of HEFF, Karen Davies MBE, said: “This is a fantastic move for HEFF, as it takes the organisation forward, benefiting not only our food producers but also the students at Shrewsbury College.
“The students will have the added value of working alongside an industry body such as HEFF and will be able to have hands-on work experience and training in numerous skills from business development and marketing right through to retailing and running a kitchen and restaurant.”
The organisation is expected to have completed its move from the centre to the college site by March 1.
