College Art Lecturer to be Artist in residence at Powys Castle.
Matthew Wood, MA Fine Art, Lecturer of Art at Shrewsbury College has been selected as the Artist in residence at Powys Castle, Welshpool.
Matthew who runs the Higher Level Art Programme will begin his time at the castle in April 2014 and will be based in the castle courtyard one day a week for approximately four months.
‘I paint on found and fabricated sections of board in one sitting in specific site locations, exploring the painterly depiction of space and distance and a sense of place and atmosphere’ says Matthew.
He uses gouache on board for interior paintings and oil on board for landscape scenes and his time at Powys will be spent using these materials to produce unique interior and garden paintings. All of which will be available to view in the grounds.
After recently completing his first Major Solo Exhibition at Ffin y Parc Country House and Gallery, Conwy, Matthew said, ‘I am delighted to start work at Powys Castle and hope to encourage my students and other Artists to actively paint in the local community,’
The second year students Matthew teaches will be starting a live assignment at Powys Castle this December, with the opportunity to exhibit work there in November 2014. This will run as well as the part time 10 week interior course that will be based at Attingham Park Shrewsbury this term, of which there are still places available.
