Carpenters win through to national competition

Two Shrewsbury College carpenters are heading for a national competition after taking top prizes in the regional heat of the UK’s largest multi-trade competition.

Jedd Renshaw, 20, won first prize in Site Carpentry at the 2012 SkillBuild competition, which was staged at South Birmingham College last week. Fellow student Hal Pharo, 18, took second place within same category.

“It was quite nerve-racking,” said Jedd Renshaw. “I’m really excited about competing again – we want to go the whole way.”

Stuart Raine, Assistant Head of School for Technology at Shrewsbury College, said: “The competition is always tight, but they set about it in exactly the right way and produced work of a very high standard.”

The regional heat saw the Shrewsbury College duo setting out and cutting a complex pitched roof, which took a day to complete. If successful in the national final, students will have the opportunity to compete for a place in the UK Squad at the WorldSkills competition, which will be held in Leipzig, Germany next year.
