Doing this course has really boosted my self-confidence. It may sound silly but it has given me the confidence to believe that I can see a project through to completion. That’s something I never thought I would do. When I joined the class that was my aim, to complete something I started. I’m enjoying it tremendously and have already enrolled for the next class, with two projects under way.
]]>After two years doing the National Diploma in Musical theatre it is all starting to happen for me now. My time at college is really proving worthwhile.
]]>The Wrekin Housing Trust has been working with Shrewsbury College’s Construction Centre in Telford, since it opened in 2006. During that time we have worked closely together and have developed a good working relationship. No matter what we have ask of them, they have always delivered, be it from running OSAT based qualifications, to working with us to develop and deliver bespoke one-off courses. We have also worked closely with them in regards to offering work placements and this has lead to us taking on 6 apprentices.
]]>Shropshire Council and the former Bridgnorth District Council have worked in partnership with Shrewsbury College to deliver Maintenance Operations NVQs to a number of employees within the Housing and Maintenance teams. Having all successfully achieved, we now have a fully qualified multi-skilled team who are keen to develop further. We are now working with our supervisory team who are currently working towards a Level three qualification.
During this time, I have found Shrewsbury College to be helpful, flexible and pro-active. These qualifications are extremely complex and in true partnership we have worked together to ensure our workforce are recognised formally for the professional service they provide
]]>This course has been more than I expected. It has given me a lot of experience and a lot of confidence. Having completed levels two and three I am now going on to do the Higher National Certificate in Music Technology part time over two years – that’s so I can work on a radio station as well.
]]>I took Health and Social Care to become a primary school teacher as I didn’t want to go away to university. I can stay with my family, save a lot of money and still study what I really want. With this qualification I can enrol with Edge Hill University, which has a base at Radbrook Campus, and train as a teacher.
]]>I got interested in counselling when I needed to explore my own issues and realised I wanted to be able to help others. This realisation led me to a course here in counselling skills which I really enjoyed. I continued my studies to the Diploma level which has been difficult and challenging but is the most rewarding thing I can imagine. I would seriously consider doing a Foundation Degree in Counselling and then going on to a full degree.
]]>In my professional capacity I am able to use the CBT approach with students who have been referred to me for practical help with their behaviour. It gives me a down-to-earth tool to use in the educational environment where I work and I’m sure it would be useful in many other walks of life. The course was taught in a relaxed way at Shrewsbury College and I thoroughly enjoyed doing it.
]]>Tom completed his training at Shrewsbury College five years ago and was accepted onto an 18-month programme for trainee managers at a five-star hotel in Brighton. He’s still there and well established in catering management. “I am ambitious to succeed and one day want to be manager of a top hotel, so I am focused, but catering is very broad - it can lead into other things, the higher you go the more it coincides with business management.”
]]>Rory completed the National Diploma in Musical Theatre two years ago and was promptly offered a three-year scholarship at the Performers College in Essex, whose recent students have performed in some 30 West End and national musicals. “Training for a career in theatre is very expensive and I worked to pay my own way until getting the scholarship. You have to have the motivation and Shrewsbury College got me really inspired. I got distinctions in my National Diploma, which in turn helped me get a place at the Performers College.”
]]>Rachael is working towards a career in live arts management, but says “if I hadn’t been able to come here to college and gain the National Diploma in Music Technology then it would have been far more difficult for me to go to university and do the course I need.”
]]>]]>Becoming an electrician was not easy, mainly because of having to find a company willing to take me on as an Apprentice. But once I had that sorted everything went well. Before coming to college I had done A levels, but that was the wrong route for me. Being here on a vocational course was ideal and I came top in my year – I’m also the college’s first fully qualified woman electrician. ]]>All my life I had wanted to be a hairdresser and at last I have achieved my ambition. My mother wouldn’t let me train as a hairdresser because my father’s health was very poor and in those days hairdressing didn’t pay well. Instead, I trained as a secretary and that was that for many years. Now I am 62 and with my three sons all grown up and independent I realised my chance had come at last. Three years ago I enrolled at Shrewsbury College to study women’s hairdressing and having gained those qualifications I went on to study men’s hairdressing. Now I am fully qualified, but I have gained more than qualifications. Coming to college has given me back my self-confidence, it has altered my life and taught me that I can do more than I used to think possible.
]]>I am now doing a Masters Degree at Staffordshire University after completing a Foundation Degree in Creative Arts at Shrewsbury College. My big interest is in community arts and hopefully I will be able to develop a career in rural regeneration as my degree work progresses.
This was second time around for me at Shrewsbury College. I first came here some 30 years ago as a business course student, but the great love of my life has always been art. I worked with Youth Arts London and then in arts projects in Poland until 2003. I have also collaborated on a book called Hippo and Friends which is a favourite in Britain and abroad for very young children taking their first steps in English. But as an artist I am a self-taught and the great attraction of the Foundation Degree was that it helped me get a broader perspective and ultimately paved the way to the MA course.
]]>I was a career police officer with the West Midlands force and some of the circumstances we had to deal with convinced me to become a counsellor and specialise in work with abused children. I first came to Shrewsbury College five years ago and then came back again to do the Diploma in Theory and Practice of Counselling, which is a university level course accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am now practising in workplaces and schools all over Shropshire and want to go on and take a degree in counselling.
