What does the course involve?

In this beginner's course you will learn the basic skills needed to create your own sterling silver jewellery. You will experience the use of a range of jewellery tools and techniques in a friendly and relaxed environment. Your experienced tutor will guide you through a range of short projects to make a pendant or earrings and a ring with stone cabochon stone setting. You will have the opportunity to bring your own style and design ideas to life in silver. You will be guided through the following projects over the first few weeks.

Sawing/piercing - Using the jeweller's piercing saw to cut out a shape in sterling silver sheet. Learn how to set up and use the saw and create a simple shape.

Annealing, texturing and shaping silver - Learn how to gently heat your metal to "soften" it, allowing you to then decorate your cut shape with texture and shaping techniques. Then add findings to transform your design into a pendant or earrings. You will also learn how to polish you finished design.

Ring making - Learn how to measure a ring size, form and shape and ring and you will also learn how to use a hand held butane torch to solder your silver ring. You will have the option to decorate the surface of the ring or use a range of simple surface finishes.

The remaining time can be used to create your own simple design using your new skills.

A selection of materials will be available to buy from your tutor at cost price. (Please bring cash for any purchases).

How is the course assessed?

Discussion between tutor and the students as a group and as individuals will take place each week, to guide you to improve your skills.
